Advanced Placement® Academic Content Seminar

A culmination course for Advanced Placement* teachers which addresses in-depth discussion, field experiences and current research covering all content areas. Participants will address the specific content area in which they teach and develop a portfolio in the course. All class meetings are online. In addition to the assigned readings, there are 10-15 hours of additional classroom assignments and 6-8 hours of classroom observations or the equivalent. Participants develop a portfolio that includes written analytical reflections of their observations on ways to blend content knowledge with pedagogical knowledge.

Prerequisites: EDUC X396.1, Foundations of Advanced Placement*, and one content area course or its equivalent.

Shakespeare: Text & Theater

A study of Shakespearian plays presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon and at Shakespeare's Globe in London. Participate in small group seminars on play preparation, post- play discussions, and Q & A's with the actors. Access to the archives and resources of the RSC and the Birthplace Trust's Shakespeare Center. Includes attendance at nightly performances by the RSC of As You Like It, Titus Andronicus, Mad World My Masters [Middleton], and Hamlet with options for The Tempest and Macbeth at Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London.

Analysis of Seven Great Plays on Film

A class inspired by the 2006 article by Richard Corliss in Time Magazine, "7 Greatest Plays on Film."
The seven films included in the course are:

The Philadelphia Story (1940)
A Streetcar Named Desire
(1951)

The Miracle Worker
(1962)

The Lion in Winter
(1968)
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)
Romeo + Juliet
(1996)
The Importance of Being Earnest
(2002)

All class meetings are online. Students watch these seven films and discuss them online throughout the class, analyze the difference between stage plays and film, and how these play texts translate into film. Assignments include reading one of the plays, writing a report, and preparing a presentation.
